Mythology Distillery in Steamboat Springs, Colorado was born out of an Alaska backcountry ski trip. The pristine Colorado Valley is home to some of the best skiing in the state and pairs well with Mythology’s spirits. Founder Scott Yeats shares the journey that led him to such a scenic valley to distill his spirits.

Last summer Mythology decided to relocate from Denver, where it started in 2018, to Steamboat Springs. Yeats sees the move as setting up a destination distillery experience, complete with an outdoor whiskey garden on 1.5 acres of pristine land.

Before setting out for the remote rugged corner of Colorado, Mythology made a name for its distillery with award-winning spirits including gin, whiskey, vodka, and specialty spirits. With more than 60 national and international awards, Mythology distributes its spirits in 10 states.

Yeats holds fast to the philosophy that people develop their own “mythology” by traveling the world and sharing adventures with others. It’s part of the reason he located the brand new campus in Steamboat that sits near Copper Ridge Mountain. However, his journey started miles away and years before.

“The inspiration that led me to start Mythology is how my friends and I enjoy a glass of whiskey or cocktails while on a ski trip, camping, or sharing stories about travel,” he said. “We had a unique opportunity to locate the business in Denver in 2018 and as we grew, relocating to Steamboat has always been top of mind. In 2021 we were able to purchase the property in Steamboat that we developed our campus on, and we are so excited to have brought Mythology here!”

Relocating Mythology to Steamboat is a natural fit for the brand and company. With the new campus, Yeats and the team are able to bring locals and visitors to Mythology to share stories about the day’s adventures and their travels over a glass of whiskey and cocktails.

“My wife Lauren, dog Telle, and I moved to Steamboat in 2017. We were initially drawn to Steamboat by good friends that live here and the abundance of recreation activities,” Yeats said. “This town has an incredible sense of community where we help support one another and as a result, we have formed close friendships and consider Steamboat to be our forever home.”

A Distillery Worth the Journey

For those uninitiated to Steamboat, it is off the beaten path located in the northern part of the state. Steamboat is world renowned for champagne powder skiing, fantastic fishing, a rustic downtown, and hot springs with great views.

When asked if it is worth the drive, Yeats does not hold back.

“Heck yeah! We’re located in a magical place, and we’re now one of the many fun experiences that someone can check out when visiting Steamboat Springs,” he said.

Steamboat is fast becoming a hot spot for spirits as visitors are excited to see what Mythology is all about. But for Yeats, it all comes down to the people — those he gets to work with, as well as those he gets to share his spirits with.

“It’s an awesome experience as the owner to connect with our customers. Creating this experience in a destination town has allowed me to meet great people from all over the country that we’re able to share our story with and hear theirs over some whiskey. We have an awesome team of adventure-seeking individuals who share that same passion. I also love the whiskey garden and slides!”

The New Campus & Bright Future

Mythology’s new distillery location includes a 5,000-square-foot distillery with a new tasting room and a modern log cabin-style look. The new location also means that Mythology can now highlight the distilling process for visitors while increasing the brand’s production.

Thanks to the Steamboat location, Mythology’s production capacity jumped. Current production is around 12,000 cases per year and will rise to 40,000 to 50,000 cases per year, within the next 5 years.

Some of the new additions to the campus that visitors will enjoy include the outdoor Whiskey Garden which includes a large fire pit along with live music, games, and even a mountain slide for the kids.

There is also a full cocktail bar full of Mythology spirits along with boutique wines and craft beers. And for fare, the campus is home to a restaurant known for its Asian soup dumplings and noodle dishes.

The campus also has a second 5,000-square-foot rackhouse for aging barrels, which will lend to the distillery’s future growth.
