A decade ago there were only a few craft breweries in Tasmania but today the craft beer scene is gaining international acclaim despite recent challenges. "We've seen a significant downturn in the industry recently due to rising costs," says Jack Viney, head brewer at MOO Brew, who notes increases in the price of electricity, transportation, malt, hops, and the alcohol tax. Yet despite those bumps in the road, the craft beer scene in Tasmania continues to expand and Viney attributes this growth to a combination of consumer demand and the development of the tourism sector. "Our breweries and taprooms are packed during the busy summer months, which is a great sign," he shares. Perhaps the craft beer industry is taking a page from the already booming wine industry.

For visitors looking to explore Tasmania's craft beer scene, there are endless breweries and taprooms to discover. From the established breweries to newer, smaller ones.

MOO Brew, Tasmania's oldest independent brewery, has played a pivotal role in shaping the state's craft beer landscape. Celebrating its 20th anniversary next year, the brewery has consistently set the standard for quality and innovation. In true David Walsh fashion (owner of MONA Hobart), Manky Sally's is a unique taphouse in Hobart that blends a DIY dive bar aesthetic with the sleek sophistication of a Bond villain's lair. The space is filled with repurposed and reclaimed materials, from plumbing fixtures, turned into lighting to a taxidermied squirrel. The centerpiece is a captivating wall and ceiling installation made from over 3,000 unique bottles overlooking an onyx dining table. A five-tank nano-brewery provides a constant flow of experimental brews while the kitchen serves up delicious street food.
